Test your assumptionsA seemingly simple interaction of “scanning” a floor decal and looking up to see an entertaining 3D animation is surprisingly difficult. Breaking down this user interaction, it actually includes a lot of parts—like the physical design of the decal, all the 2D UI, and all the 3D AR elements. We discovered that people continued to look at the floor decal unless there were multiple AR elements, like an animated dotted line, to assist the user to pan their camera phone up.2. Make it usefulThe pin hunt gives attendees a goal to find all the partner booths in the cavernous halls of the MWC conference. As we thought about the AR companion to that experience, the problem became clear: How do we point the person to the next partner booth? This question is one that AR is uniquely equipped to solve. We took some lessons from Google Maps to help us design the scavenger hunt’s AR elements. We made each floor decal unique; scanning one would tell users where they are in the Android Partner Walk, and enable us to point them to uncollected pins nearby.3. Bring delightIt was awesome to see MWC attendees’ smiles and surprise when collecting their AR Android pins. These were people in business suits, roaming the show floor between meetings, engaged with a collection experience where they were willing to walk long distances to complete the challenge. We put a lot of care in developing the 21 fully-animated 3D scenes and were glad people enjoyed them.4. Be responsiveOne of our biggest worries was a user pointing their camera at the floor decal and it either 1) not triggering at all or 2) unresponsive for an unacceptable amount of time. Anything over two seconds starts to make users question whether they have done something wrong or whether the app is buggy—both are poor user experiences. Related to responsiveness, we also felt that these AR collection interactions should be short and sweet. We wanted the attendees to see a delightful Android, collect it, and quickly orient to the next booth to visit: all in under 30 seconds.5. Learn from your mistakesLike any project, once it’s in the wild, you realize some things should have been done differently. One lesson is that we should’ve made the floor decals much larger. When placed next to our office desks, they seemed huge, but when placed in the Fira Barcelona conference hall, they looked quite tiny. Lesson learned! We’re gearing up for the Book Expo America, 2016 in May.  That means we’ll be running some specials, and we’re also streamlining our unique platform for our new clientele.  As a result, there will be three types of Embellisher™ Mobile Publishing Platform installations available to self-published authors, teachers, and large publishers/distributors of eBooks.  Our clients will be able to download the complete installation and follow the directions included.  They will also have the excellent technical assistance of our developer, Bas Van Stein, who will also be working with clients to “brand” the installation to the owner’s “look and feel.”  Once licensed, the platform can be up and open for business in 24 hours.  Here’s a brief description of the three installations that will be available for download:
5.  The value of keeping authors and readers happy.  The main problem of reading digital content, as we see at EMRE, is the fact that all those proprietors of information want you to be locked-in to their hardware, their software and their mobile systems in order to make the biggest profit.  What has resulted is more confusion and less happiness.  Not only have authors become less happy with the Amazon way of delivering their “babies,” their creative eBooks, the publishers who represent them have begun to sell directly to those same eReaders–bypassing the Amazonian experience completely.  We, too, are members of this rebellion.  We want to also make the creating and reading experience even simpler by keeping it inside one app and delivering all the content (even print) to keep the reader happy.
The trade-off among these methods involve quality, time, and price. As the old saying goes, you can generally pick two. In order to get all three, you’re going to need to become an ebook maven yourself, which will take a fair amount of time, but which will allow you to control all of the variables yourself. Amazon recently unloaded a new version of their Kindle to the perhaps “less than eager” reading public.  With publishers losing over 3 billion dollars a year to eBook piracy, mostly due to the insecure Digital Rights Management of Amazon’s and other eBook retailer’s platforms, it makes you wonder how long publishers will keep selling their digital and print books through the giant online retailers.  But, most importantly, the reading public is changing their reading habits.  Each day, more and more readers are using whichever mobile device they have with them, so it makes having “extra” devices like the Kindle superfluous.

We've talked before about the importance of including social sharing buttons on your marketing content. Sure, the landing page behind which you gate your ebook is a great place for these buttons, but why not also stamp them onto the pages of your ebooks as well? It makes sense, right? A potential reader might not feel comfortable sharing your ebook before they've read it and know they like the content, but while they're reading it? That's a different story.
Another design element you might want to include in your ebooks is an author page, particularly if you have multiple members of your team creating ebooks. For example, if the author of the ebook is an expert on that topic, an author page that highlights the author's bio and relevancy to the topic is a great way to add credibility to the content. On your author page, include a brief bio of the author, a headshot, and if you choose to, a way for readers to get in touch with the author if they have questions, such as an email address, Twitter username, or phone number.
HubSpot's ebooks, for instance, are categorized by skill level -- introductory, intermediate, or advanced -- depending on the skill level of our readers. To identify which is which, we use a combination of color scheme and a category key to denote which ebooks are targeted for which skill level. If an ebook is intermediate level like our example here, the cover and color scheme throughout the book uses blue as the dominant color, and a page in the beginning of the book explains which type of audience would benefit from each skill level. Introductory content uses a charcoal color scheme, and advanced content uses an orange color scheme. We've also extended this tagging system to our blog. You'll notice this particular blog post, for example, has also been tagged as 'intermediate.'

My suggestion for publishing a book is generally going to be the following: Format the ebook for the best possible compatibility between devices by creating a version for Smashwords and a version for Kindle Direct Publishing. This high-compatibility formatting and the use of these two platforms means your book becomes available for almost any device that reads ebooks, and the ebook will appear relatively consistently regardless of the app/device being used to read it. For the print edition, I generally suggest Amazon's CreateSpace. This is the most direct route to having your print book sold via Amazon, the world's largest online retailer of books. --- Editing services: For editing and proofreading, I suggest the use of Microsoft Word's track changes features or the use of commenting/annotations for PDFs. This allows you to personally review my suggestions or changes and decide if you want to accept them. 4.  The value of intimacy.  All other publishing systems require the author and his reader to be located inside separate spaces in the digital universe.  We have solved this problem of lack of intimacy and privacy by including an Author and Reader Forum right inside the same mobile application.  The forum has all the features of a Goodreads, but the reader and author are not relegated to a separate group within a much larger playing field of authors and readers.  The communication is between one author and his subscribed readers–not between thousands of “Goodreads Authors” and the distracted readers who subscribe to Goodreads.com.  Again, this saves the publisher and reader a lot of communication headaches as well as making the sending and receiving of digital content a private and meaningfully simple affair.   Thoreau would be proud!
With Lucidpress, it’s easier than ever before to create an ebook and share it with the world. You can write the text of your ebook in Google Drive and import it easily into the ebook creator software. You can create a layout in InDesign and import that as well. Make your ebook while in the cloud, or use Lucidpress’s offline version if you’re away from the internet. Once you’re connected again, it will automatically sync. Even if you have very little experience when it comes to design, Lucidpress gives you the tools to create an ebook that will impress and inform.
We’re gearing up for the Book Expo America, 2016 in May.  That means we’ll be running some specials, and we’re also streamlining our unique platform for our new clientele.  As a result, there will be three types of Embellisher™ Mobile Publishing Platform installations available to self-published authors, teachers, and large publishers/distributors of eBooks.  Our clients will be able to download the complete installation and follow the directions included.  They will also have the excellent technical assistance of our developer, Bas Van Stein, who will also be working with clients to “brand” the installation to the owner’s “look and feel.”  Once licensed, the platform can be up and open for business in 24 hours.  Here’s a brief description of the three installations that will be available for download:
