There has always been a healthy market for commercial books written by experts, and this isn’t likely to change any time soon; sometimes there’s just no substitute for splashing your cash and getting high-quality content in return. That said, there’s a growing movement towards free and “freemium” content on the web, and the quality of the content is often on a par with the books you’d part cash for.

HubSpot's ebooks, for instance, are categorized by skill level -- introductory, intermediate, or advanced -- depending on the skill level of our readers. To identify which is which, we use a combination of color scheme and a category key to denote which ebooks are targeted for which skill level. If an ebook is intermediate level like our example here, the cover and color scheme throughout the book uses blue as the dominant color, and a page in the beginning of the book explains which type of audience would benefit from each skill level. Introductory content uses a charcoal color scheme, and advanced content uses an orange color scheme. We've also extended this tagging system to our blog. You'll notice this particular blog post, for example, has also been tagged as 'intermediate.'
While my example has a few chapters, keep in mind that your ebook does not need to be lengthy. I have one golden rule for ebook length: Write what is needed to effectively educate your audience about your selected topic. If that requires five pages, great! If that requires 30 pages, so be it. Just don't waste words thinking you need to write a long ebook.

Using their software I have been able to create engaging, fun, and highly educational eBooks that have been instrumental in my students learning and education.
If all of that code looks scary to you — don’t worry. Though it’s essential to know some basic HTML if you want to get under the hood of your ePub file, there are other ways to create ebooks. And I’ll be talking some more about what all of that gobbledygook actually is in coming months. (If you’d like to jumpstart that process, I highly recommend Liz Castro’s excellent introduction, ePub Straight to the Point. It’s a few years old, but still does an great job of covering the basics.)
When Abby Hoffman said, “Steal this book,” back in the 1970s, there were no eBooks.  He meant that the reader should literally steal his paperback.  Flash-forward to 2016, and readers can steal eBooks with no trouble as long as publishers allow the DRM of an Amazon or an iBooks.  Anybody right now can do a search for “Cross Kill and torrents” and get a download of the complete BookShot.  This is why publishers are losing three billion dollars per year (and climbing).
2.  The value of delivery to the end consumer:  a reader of digital content.  The reader gets to experience exactly what the author/publisher intends to deliver.  Not only that but the eBook can be in conventional (ePub2 format, .mobi Kindle format, or .pdf Adobe Reader format) as well as the cutting-edge ePub3 format.  And, if they wish, they can push a button to order the print-on-demand version of the book and have it shipped to them. There are no “middlemen” taking a slice out of that business experience, as in a gatekeeper’s fee or as in confusing extra logins and deliveries to different devices.  The communication is between the publisher and the reader–scratch off those sneaky middlemen!
In the Brand House Book, Lindeback aims to make branding tangible by comparing it to building a house. A great way to make your ebook design look more professional is to use a different font for your chapter heading (use a font from the book's cover). Be careful of copyright infringement, though, and make sure you have the license to use a font digitally. Ereaders have very few built-in fonts, so you'll need to embed the font in the ebook. Click here for instructions on how to do that using the Jutoh software.
Matthew Butterick is a designer who’s also a lawyer (or perhaps a lawyer who’s also a designer), and his free typography volume (if you find it useful he offers a few suggestions on ways to pay him) is a suitably thorough collection of all the things you always wanted to know about typography but were afraid to ask. The ‘Typography in 10 minutes’ opening chapter is as good a typographical primer as you’ll find anywhere, and from there it goes on to cover pretty much everything with the right mix of detail and clear language.

Not really a waste of time, the reviews are good and did make me aware of these ePub creators. I used to have one that worked on my PC, most of these new ones all work from a website.  I’m still looking for the one I used to have on my PC, it could accept word or pages docs and spat out several different ePub variations. But I can’t find it again, forgot what it was called even. Thanks for adding the links.
