"Staying well-hydrated helps your body function properly, and it also helps make sure you don’t overeat," Pam Bede, M.S., R.D. with Abbott’s EAS Sports Nutrition, tells SELF. But it's not just that staying hydrated keeps you from overeating. According to Maxine Yeung, M.S., R.D., owner of The Wellness Whisk, sometimes you may feel hungry when, in fact, you're actually thirsty. Basically, no harm can come from drinking a glass of water.
Situated in a cozy, renovated former military building from the 1950’s, this long-anticipated restaurant/brewery has not only created a menu using local ingredients, but also a relationship between the beers and food. For example, spent grains from the brewery make their way into bread, and leftover fruit peels add unique flavors to the beers. Menu highlights include the Hearth Bread (served with mesquite butter and roasted garlic), Aged Pork Ribs (black beer vinegar, garden dry rub, spring onion), and warm-weather beer like the Idée Fixe, which is described as having flavors of “summer, English breakfast, lemon zest, black tea leaves.”
That means one drink a day for women, two a day for men. People over 65 should drink even less. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1½ ounces of 80-proof spirits. While alcohol has potential heart benefits, it poses a variety of health risks, especially in excess amounts. And some people shouldn't drink at all, including pregnant women and those taking medications that interact with alcohol. People with liver disease, high trigylcerides, sleep apnea, and certain other conditions should ask their doctors about the advisability of drinking.

However, Japan native executive chef Yoshi Okai’s energy, punk rock attitude, and childlike enthusiasm makes Otoko’s omakase offerings the hottest -- and most fun -- ticket in town. While we’d love to share menu highlights and recommendations, we don’t know what chef Yoshi has up his sleeve from one day to the next, other than a perfect balance of reverence and rule-breaking and the ability to surprise and delight all who sit at his counter.
Live food is commonly used as feed for a variety of species of exotic pets and zoo animals, ranging from alligators to various snakes, frogs and lizards, but also including other, non-reptile, non-amphibian carnivores and omnivores (for instance, skunks, which are omnivorous mammals, can be technically be fed a limited amount of live food, though this is not known to be a common practice). Common live food ranges from crickets (used as an inexpensive form of feed for carnivorous and omnivorous reptiles such as bearded dragons and commonly available in pet stores for this reason), waxworms, mealworms and to a lesser extent cockroaches and locusts, to small birds and mammals such as mice or chickens.

What counts as a family meal? Whenever you and your family eat together — whether it's takeout food or a home-cooked meal with all the trimmings. Strive for nutritious food and a time when everyone can be there. This may mean eating dinner a little later to accommodate a teen who's at sports practice. It also can mean setting aside time on the weekends when it may be more convenient to gather as a group, such as for Sunday brunch.


There’s plenty to reflect upon on this one year anniversary: where I started, where I am now, and what I’ve learned.  I started this new adventure on January 11 last year.  At that time, I was always tired no matter how much I slept. I had a perpetually runny nose and lost my voice often. The sugar cravings were outrageous! I also had GI issues that were worsening with no avail.  I started the Eat Your Way Clean journey as a way to cure these ailments. What I learned from the 1 year of clean living is that this isn’t a cure or a quick fix… it’s a way of life.
A better approach is to make a few small changes at a time. Keeping your goals modest can help you achieve more in the long term without feeling deprived or overwhelmed by a major diet overhaul. Think of planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps—like adding a salad to your diet once a day. As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices.
Prepare more of your own meals. Cooking more meals at home can help you take charge of what you’re eating and better monitor exactly what goes into your food. You’ll eat fewer calories and avoid the chemical additives, added sugar, and unhealthy fats of packaged and takeout foods that can leave you feeling tired, bloated, and irritable, and exacerbate symptoms of depression, stress, and anxiety.

Vaquero's known for handmade corn and flour tortillas, juicy al pastor sliced from the trompo (aka vertical rotisserie), fresh salsas, and killer breakfast tacos. Try the quesadilla al pastor: a handmade tortilla with pan-seared Oaxacan cheese and caramelized marinated pork garnished with cilantro, onion, roasted salsa roja or verde, fresh avocado cream, and topped off with a pineapple slice.
The saturated fats in animal foods generally boost levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and have other adverse effects. To limit your intake, choose lean meats, skinless poultry, and nonfat or low-fat dairy products. It’s also a good idea to replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats (see next slide). Keep in mind, though, that not all saturated fats are bad for you; those in chocolate, milk, and cheese, for example, are more neutral in their effect on blood cholesterol. Trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils are even worse than saturated fats, but FDA regulations have now nearly phased them out of the food supply.

Supplements can't substitute for a healthy diet, which supplies other potentially beneficial compounds besides vitamins and minerals. Foods also provide the synergy that many nutrients require to be efficiently used in the body. Still, for many people a basic multivitamin/mineral pill can provide some of the nutrients they may fall short on. Certain people may also need supplements of folic acid, vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin D (see next slide).

Nowadays I don’t get sick and my throat is a lot better than when I started. (Did you hear that? I don’t get sick anymore! I got sick once last year and it was after I decided to test going completely off-wagon. Victory Dance!!). I can’t remember the last time I lost my voice. I feel more rested these days, like my sleep is actually restorative. I’m less stressed and my cortisol levels are evening out.
